VT4E IN NIGERIA
[08:42] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Okay well that leaves us more time for our main guest
[08:42] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): JulianLAG, please come down and sit on the front with me
[08:43] julianLAG: ok. thank you Rik
[08:44] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Juliana is the CEO of VT4E in Nigeria, a nonprofit that seeks to use virtual worlds to facilitate equitable access to education in Africa for young people
[08:44] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): let's welcome her to the NPC
[08:44] Buffy Beale: fantastic!
[08:44] Buffy Beale: cheering loudly!!!
[08:44] Brena Benoir: Welcome Juliana
[08:44] julianLAG: thanks everyone...
[08:44] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): just right click on one of the stools beside me Juliana
[08:44] Glitteractica Cookie: fantastic
[08:44] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Welcome Juliana
[08:44] Gentle Heron: Nice project goal, Juliana.
[08:45] julianLAG: yes, ithink so with 30 million africans out of school
[08:46] julianLAG: something drastic has to be done , regardles sof their location or incom ebracket
[08:46] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Can you tell us a littlemore about your organization and how you became interested in virtual worlds as a technology?
[08:48] julianLAG: a non profit taht was strated after my attendance of the immersive summit in Boston, 2010. our goals is to reach eevry african uisng immersive education of all type sstaring with virtual technology to reach them
[08:49] julianLAG: sorry so much typos. I meant iED , boston Summit, 2010. ww are still lokkoing for funds but our pilot is the oldest high school in nigeria.
[08:49] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): thats fine. I make typos every third word!
[08:50] julianLAG: we are open to collaboration usind 3D because visual stimulation make learning more fun and engagingg
[08:50] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): That's great. So of all the technologies taht could be used to help African young people, why virtual worlds?
[08:51] julianLAG: I had called out for collaborative opporrunitie s nad the most commited response was from a vitual technologist from France who had lived in a neighbouring african country.
[08:52] Gentle Heron: Julian, can you please tell us some statistics? What are the percents of Nigerians today who have: (1) electricity, (2) cell phones, (3) Internet access, (4) high school level education?
[08:52] Veri Oddfellow: *waves* Hiya all! Veri Oddfellow, here, Brad Lewis IRL. Great Strides, Healing with Horses, Damascus, MD, USA http://www.GreatStrides.org
[08:52] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (hi veri. good to see you.)
[08:53] Veri Oddfellow: Back atcha Rik! Looking good, buddy. ;-)
[08:54] julianLAG: wWow! nigeria is 150+ in population, 15million of Africa;s ourt of school come form there. 60% have ecall phones, 75% habve access to the intenet in the 3 major busines cities; Lagos, Abuja and Ibadan
[08:54] julianLAG: electricity is prblem so most businesses and stuff are run on power generators
[08:55] Gentle Heron: What percent of the population is NOT in those 3 major business cities? I assume the access issues are much more difficult for those folks.
[08:57] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Before we get into the challenges, perhaps Juliana could tell us more her vision for what virtual worlds could do to improve education in Africa for young people
[08:57] julianLAG: access issue sare more for the ones in the hinterland. but 80% living in those citires have acess to internet, electricity, mobile phines, computers, and waht not. Nigerai ais agrowinfg society hence one of teh emerginf g markets with high purchasing power. most of the popele live in the cities where there is access to all these.
[08:58] Zazoom Zimminy: /me whispers Kyle Reis, Grants Managers Network, NYC
[08:59] julianLAG: My cvison is to see taht every child has access to qaulity education. where distence and income level wouldnot be aproblem. Also an educated nation is a more trnaparent and democratice country.
[09:00] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): That's very inspiring and worthy. But of all the ways to accomplish that, what makes virtual worlds particularly special or a good strategy to reach that goal?
[09:00] julianLAG: Virtual technology in education would be acatalyst for all...train the teachers type of thing , and educatiate teh children in an interacative environment taht is engaing ....and fun... we all knwo how a boring calsdsx is a dissuasion to learning
[09:02] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): And what do you see as the first steps to take to try out your ideas?
[09:03] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): It looks like you are looking for collaborators and partners?
[09:03] julianLAG: we have apilot school already, get collaborators and aprtners who are in it for teh long haul.. who see the big picture
[09:05] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): And what are the main assets, skills and knowledge you would want in a collaborator? What are your main needs to get started?
[09:09] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): (sorryabout that, got logged out)
[09:10] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): How can people help your project get off the ground, Juliana?
[09:11] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Or what questions can we help you answer today?
[09:13] julianLAG: lknowing waht you know now about the cell phines, internet availablity, power situation/. \i'd like to know waht other technology can be added to the virtual to enhance the delivery , possible psrtners especailly ome swho have workrd in rural America /using mobile phones
[09:14] julianLAG: we need funds too to assist any partnesr in the deployment of additional solutions
[09:15] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Well perhaps others have questions or suggestions for ways for Juliana to get started, or to find out more?
[09:15] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Sounds like she is very much at the beginning and looking for ideas and possible people to help out
[09:15] julianLAG: ok. shoot
[09:15] Buffy Beale: Hi Julian, how did you find out about Second Life?
[09:16] julianLAG: I meat wes wiiliams who works for tbost public schools , whe introduced me to it sort of
[09:17] julianLAG: Wes williams works for Boston public schools, met him at the Ied Summit
[09:17] Buffy Beale: great and welcome :)
[09:17] julianLAG: tahnks.
[09:18] Zotarah Shepherd: In which city is VT4E located?
[09:18] Buffy Beale: There are other groups in Second Life from Africa, including FeedASmile so it may be good for you to connect with them
[09:19] julianLAG: lagos Nigeria
[09:19] julianLAG: great then.
[09:19] Rhiannon Chatnoir: are in the Boston area Julian?
[09:19] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): no nigeria,Rhiannon
[09:19] julianLAG: No, I attended the iED 2010,
[09:19] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): She went to IED
[09:19] Rhiannon Chatnoir: ahh was wondering with the Boston contacts.. nod
[09:19] Rhiannon Chatnoir: that is coming up in June again
[09:21] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): What other ideas and contacts might help Juliana get her project started?
[09:21] julianLAG: yes please .....
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I think for me the first thing would be to create an outreach document that outlines why virtual worlds are an effective intervention for reaching African students, versus otehr technologies and support they might receive.
[09:23] Gentle Heron: What level educucation are you trying to achieve?
[09:23] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): If I were a funder or a potential partner, I would want to know that.
[09:24] julianLAG: high school and then tertiary education....
[09:24] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): welcome , deadblacknote. Please have a seat in the audience.
[09:24] Zotarah Shepherd: I might have some contacts in Nigeria who could help your mission. I have been out of touch with them for a while, so I will have to check on their location.
[09:25] Gentle Heron: There are starting to be some excellent free postsecondary resources. Full courses and even programs of study, all free, in English. (I am assuming you want these classes in English?)
[09:25] julianLAG: Ok, atht woyuld be real great!
[09:25] Arthur Conan Doyle (arthurconan.doyle): Sorry, got here late -- do you have space in SL to conduct your mission?
[09:25] julianLAG: yes in Englaish. wea re an english speakimg country despite my typos
[09:25] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Welcome arthur. We're in the middle of a discussion now. But wait a few minutes
[09:25] Gentle Heron: We all make typos, Julian.
[09:26] julianLAG: :-)
[09:26] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): oh sorry that was for Juliana, by bad!
[09:26] Veri Oddfellow: *nods vigorously*
[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): I don't think she has land here in SL yet. this is her first visit to SL
[09:27] julianLAG: yes, it is my first time....
[09:27] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): deadblacknote, get off the stage or I'll have to remove you please
[09:27] Glitteractica Cookie: She can have a space in the NPC
[09:27] Rhiannon Chatnoir: welcome then too .. :)
[09:27] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): are you active on OpenSim?
[09:27] Arthur Conan Doyle (arthurconan.doyle): I have some space on Alice Academy. We should talk.
[09:28] Glitteractica Cookie: deadblacknote, please have a seat in the seating area
[09:28] Glitteractica Cookie: or you will get bounced
[09:28] julianLAG: tthanks arthur, Gliterectii
[09:28] julianLAG: not active on open sim.... ??/
[09:28] Second Life: Avatar ejected.
[09:28] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): cheap land ... or free if you run your own virtual world
[09:29] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): opensim is an alternative to Second Life, built on open source code
[09:30] Jen (jenelle.levenque): SpotOn3D and InWorldz both are less expensive than SL and have some support as well
[09:30] 01 Hifeng: like sl but different servers ;)
[09:30] 01 Hifeng: different 'hosting'
[09:30] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so once you build up a strategy document that outlines why virtual worlds are an effective strategy, you will need to decide on which virtual world is the best fit, since there are many
[09:30] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): as you probably learnedat IED
[09:32] Rhiannon Chatnoir: iED predominantly focuses on open source tech
[09:32] julianLAG: ok..chok. there are many . since ai ma really a novice at this ..one summit attandance does nt an exoert make... i need suggestiosn so i can make an informed decision
[09:32] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): exactly. There are some online resources that compare different virtual worlds and their relative strengths and costs
[09:33] Rhiannon Chatnoir: where are just starting your journey, Second Life proper offers up a large connected grid of people/land/projects to connect with and then you can expand from there
[09:33] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): You could ask at this listserv https://lists.secondlife.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/educators
[09:33] julianLAG: good ... i will check them out... okay . then its a good start?
[09:34] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): That is focused on SL, but many of the people there know about the alternatives
[09:35] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Its good to learn what others are doing in virtual worlds for education to get ideas of what is possible
[09:35] Zotarah Shepherd: Reaction Grid and Jokaydia Grid have many educators.
[09:35] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): those are OpenSim worlds BTW
[09:35] julianLAG: ok...good information...
[09:35] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): vwbpe.org is a good resource as well
[09:36] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): their 2012 conference ended not long ago, but lots of links and resources there I think
[09:36] Zotarah Shepherd: And VWER is a good group with weekly meetings in SL to try
[09:36] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): is there a linke for that Zotarah?
[09:36] Zotarah Shepherd: Also NMC
[09:37] julianLAG: NMC?
[09:37] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): New Media Consortium
[09:37] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): another major land holder in Second Life that focuses on education
[09:38] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): so lots of places to explore and networks to help you get started
[09:38] julianLAG: oh great! New Media Consortium..would check it out
[09:38] Zotarah Shepherd: I am getting used to a new viewer so I have to find the URLs
[09:38] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): If there are other ideas and connections that people have, what is the best way for people to contact you?
[09:38] julianLAG: email@example.com
[09:38] Zotarah Shepherd: http://secondlife.com/education - for SLED listserve
[09:39] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): great. And see http://blog.vt4e.org/
[09:39] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Let's thank Juliana for comingtoday and wish her well
[09:39] julianLAG: yes, see vt4e.org
[09:39] CarynTopia Silvercloud: thanks
[09:39] julianLAG: tahnk you for having me and bye everyone
[09:39] Zotarah Shepherd: ISTE is another good group though not as active in SL now
[09:40] Gentle Heron: Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Juliana. It's a huge undertaking.
[09:40] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Thanks Juliana
[09:40] jacmacaire Humby: Bye Juilana
[09:40] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): definitely ambitious and very worthwhile
[09:40] Jen (jenelle.levenque): Yes, you have your work cut out for you
[09:40] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): well now we are at the final part of our agenda: Open Mic
[09:40] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Who has announcements for the rest of the community?
[09:40] Zotarah Shepherd: http://www.vwer.org

[09:41] Glitteractica Cookie: or say "ME" if you don't know how to put up yr appendage
[09:41] Magic Pathfinder (any1.gynoid): ME 2
[09:41] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): lol, sorry just indicate that you wish to speak
[09:41] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Go ahead brena, and then Gentle and any1

[09:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): nice
[09:47] Rik Panganiban (rik.riel): Okay Rhiannon, and then I think we are done for today!
